Episode 11 Mea Maxima Culpa
Depending on which program you use, Mea Maxima Culpa is Latin for My Greatest Fault or Through My Most Grievous Fault. And it is the perfect title. Because, the entire episode is awash in guilt from almost everyone.
Alec feels guilty for not seeing the signs of Izzy’s addiction and not stopping it.
Izzy feels guilty because she doesn’t think she’s strong enough to beat the addiction.
Raphael feels guilty for his role in Izzy’s addiction.
Jace feels guilty for not telling Clary the truth sooner.
Only Magnus and Clary are not carrying anything. And, yet, Magnus is the one that pays the highest price when all these events collide.
I love when Alec and Jace spar. Hell, I love when Alec and Jace have any moments together. I am so obsessed with their Parabatai connection. And this scene is so much fun!
It’s possible, if I weren’t so in love with Malec - if they weren’t the reason I came to Shadowhunters in the first place - that I may have shipped Alec and Jace. At least for a minute.
Kids, what we learn from this sparring session is that Alec is better with weapons ⚔
And Jace is better at hand to hand 🤣
Jace, it is very noble that you don’t want to tell Clary that she’s not your sister. And surprisingly unselfish. But I need you to get over that. She really should hear it from you. Now.
I love how much Alec loves Izzy and wants to be there for her while she is going through the withdrawal from yin fen.
And I love how - even in the throes of withdrawal - Izzy insists that he go help with the latest demon attack.
And I just love this shot of Alec. Seriously, who told Matt he was allowed to be this pretty?!
Yeah, yeah, genetics, blah blah. Have you seen his sister, Alexandra?! I am pretty sure it is some kind of magic or the Daddario family are actual Angels on earth. Because Holy Hell!! 🔥
This scene always makes me giggle. I wonder how hard it was for Alexandra [not Daddario (Ollie)] to have to pretend that Matt and Dom weren’t there.
I just love happy and romantic Malec. They are the most adorable couple ever!!
I love that Alec knew he could come to Magnus with that dirt from the crime scene and Magnus would help. And I love that Magnus knew exactly what the ‘dirt’ was and where it came from.
I don’t blame Alec for not wanting to trust Raphael. As much as I love Raphael, he did play a role in getting Izzy addicted to yin fen.
But he is Magnus’ ‘son’ and he did come with news to help Izzy and Alec. So, I am glad that Alec did listen to him. Even not being happy about it.
I’m even more glad that Alec took Magnus with him to look for Izzy.
The way Magnus rises is so beautiful. The way Harry moves is always so fluid and elegant.

My heart breaks for Jace when he is forced, by Valentine, to finally tell the truth.
And my heart breaks for Clary that she had to find out this way. This is definitely not how I wanted her to find out. But it is better that she knows.
Fuck you, Valentine, for forcing Jace’s hand!
Jace, baby, I did tell you that you needed to tell Clary. These damn characters never listen to me!
This look on Jace’s face when Clary confronts him after is so devastating. Seriously, Dom has some of the best ‘angst’ faces!
