Episode 17 A Dark Reflection
Darkness wins out for two of our gang, in this episode. One much more of a surprise than the other.
Backed into a corner by a 12 year old, Jonathan’s true nature comes roaring to the surface. But we saw this one coming. And I am having a much easier time not liking Jonathan, right now.
After having his unconditional trust and faith in Alec ripped away by his boyfriend, Magnus struts right into his dark side - in slow motion and with the perfect (and oh so hot) scowl of betrayal. Shocking everyone except those of us that have been paying attention.
Alec spends the first half hiding vital information. And the second half internally beating himself up for not listening to me.
The only sane one’s, this go, are Jace and Clary. And how’s that for a twist.
And I spend much of this episode being ruled by my dark side as I growl at certain characters who never listen. (read: yelling at Alec to tell Magnus about the sword.)
Sweet of Jace to come running to check on Clary when he hears her scream. You know, the more I watch this show, the more I like this relationship. Which is major growth from when I watched it for the first time a year ago. But the show did spend a lot of time keeping them apart.
“With demon blood. Don’t forget that.”
Jace, darlin’, Magnus also has demon blood and we LOVE him. Don’t be ‘that’ guy, my guy.
Alec is the king of being dark, brooding, and intense. Seriously, the man has perfected that whole persona!
I like that Alec told Jace and Clary about the sword. And I love the two of them explaining to Clary why Valentine getting his grubby, evil hands on all the Mortal Instruments is a bad thing. NOW GO TELL MAGNUS, ALEC!!
Alec saying ‘All the legends are true’ just hits different.
Seriously, perfection on the dark, brooding, intense thing, Matt! It’s like he took what Angel from Buffy did and multiplied it by 1000!
I do love how far Alec has come in accepting Clary as one of them. And I do like the friendship they have built. And I really just love this shot of Clary and Jace.
Magnus is so fucking adorable peeking his little head around Alec’s office door. I really really REALLY missed that face last episode!
And so did Alec 😏
I love Magnus reassuring Alec that he understands why he missed their dinner plans. And the way he smiles after that kiss. So cute. They’re damn near the perfect couple. Emphasis on ‘damn near’
“It’s okay, Alexander. If we can’t go to the Cape, I’ll bring the Cape to us.”
Magnus manifesting this romantic dinner is so sweet. Talk about the perfect boyfriend!
ALEC!! This was your perfect moment to tell Magnus about the sword! Ugh! Why do these characters never listen to me?!
I am fascinated by this protection symbol that Dot now bears after Elliot’s demise. Of course, I love anything that puts Dot back on my screen.
There is definitely tension between Alec and Dot. I know it’s partly because Dot no longer trusts The Clave, which includes Alec as he still answers to The Clave. But I have to wonder if Alec’s is because Magnus told him about the dance and almost kiss.
Jonathan - as Sebastian - standing there and listening to his sister defend him and fight to not react is heartbreaking. You can see how he’s barely holding it back. Gods, I adore Will!
Max - Surrender to the authority of The Clave.
Simon - You’ll never take me alive Shadowhunter scum.
Max - Huh?
Simon - Dracula’s time is nigh. Nosferatu will rise again, man.
Dear Hecate, I fucking love Simon 🤣
Izzy is definitely in the right to be so worried about Max. Especially after what happened with Kayleigh.
I love Magnus and Luke’s friendship. I do not love what the info Luke is about to share is about to do to Malec!
Knowing what is coming is made worse by Magnus’ complete trust and blind faith in his boyfriend.
Yeah, you sit there looking all adorable right now, Alec. Just you wait…

The hurt and anger in Magnus is unbearable. Say hello to Dark Magnus. But how fucking amazing is Harry?!?!
Luke, I know you’re thinking that maybe telling Magnus was a bad idea. I get it. But you’re wrong. Telling him was the right thing. He would have found out eventually, most likely from someone less diplomatic than you. And it would have been so much worse.
He’s so hurt and angry and feels so betrayed. And I don’t blame him at all. But Magnus, my love, for the love of Hecate, please take a moment to calm down before you do something rash…
Yeah, Luke, I know - wishful thinking. We both know that he is about to go off the deep end. Just stay close to him, man.
You gotta admire Jace’s resolve to protect Clary. Some might say that she doesn’t need it.
I love the girl, but let’s be honest. She is constantly going off half-cocked which almost always ends with her in over her head. So yes, she does need it.
Someone please tell Alberto to do more singing. For the love the Angel!!
Max, you’re cute. And quite powerful for a 12 year old. But not very bright. Confronting Jonathan alone was extremely crazy.
