Episode 2 The Powers That Be

In this episode, we have a lot of shifting power and attempts to shift power. Mostly surrounding Magnus.

Magnus is forced to watch as the power of High Warlock is officially stripped from him and given to Lorenzo Rey.

Magnus shows that, despite the shift in title, the power is still his, as he saves Alec and Madzie when all magic goes haywire at Lorenzo’s I’m-the-king-of-the-world-now party.

Jace tries to exhibit that he has the power to function as a mundane.

Simon proves that Jace is wrong, and Simon will always be the one to hold that power.

Lorenzo tries to shift the power again by showing up to Magnus’ home and making ridiculous accusations that make him sound like a toddler who refuses to share a toy that’s not his.

Alec reminds Magnus that the power is still his by being the sweetest and most supportive boyfriend ever.

Raj tries to prove that he is more powerful than Alec by breaking a direct order and committing sabotage.

The ley lines try to prove they have all the power as they continue to terrorize the Downworld.

Magnus and Alec show both Raj and the ley lines that Malec is the best team ever. And undefeatable when they work together.

And I succumb to the complete power and owning that Magnus and Alec (and Harry and Matt) have over my very jaded soul and there is no getting it back.

This opening Malec scene is adorable. Magnus’ accidental honesty, Alec’s look. It always leaves me giggling. And I am not a person that giggles lightly.

I do love that Alec is there for Magnus. Given that this party is to usher in the new High Warlock, after it was ripped away from Magnus, Alec being here for Magnus is everything.

Yay! More Catarina! These two are so funny together. Catarina teasing Magnus about bringing Alec to annoy Lorenzo. Magnus calling Alec his boyfriend. Magnus’ smile when he does so. It’s all so adorable and I love it.

Catarina’s right. Alec is great with kids. I love seeing him with Madzie. So adorable, both of them.

And the way Alec pushes Madzie behind him after Rufus’ portal goes psycho is so heroic!

Magnus jumping in front of them to stop the portal is epic. And I am slightly embarrassed that it took two watches before I realized that Magnus had, in fact, jumped in front of Alec and Madzie because it was headed right for them. I blame being distracted by the lovely gold eyes and the beauty that is Harry Shum Jr.

And the way he deals with, and stops the portal, HERO!! He never should have lost High Warlock!!

I love the smile on Jace’s face as he watches Clary draw. And how adorable it is when he is trying to ask her out on a proper date.

It’s a relief that Magnus’ magic is back to normal. But he is still playing that losing High Warlock doesn’t bother him. Come on, Magnus. We had this conversation last episode!

I love Domestic Malec almost as much as I love Soft Malec! So damn cute!

Have we had that conversation with Daddario’s Reps about more roles where he is smiling? Because that conversation feels more and more necessary.

Although, my guy also does panicked and borderline murderous really well too - as seen in the short People Walk Dogs Late At Night In The Suburbs. HOLY CRAP! Don’t worry, that review is coming soon.

Speaking of needing to talk to Reps about roles with more smiling, someone get Harry’s on the phone. Because we also need to have that conversation.

Alec constantly smelling the shampoo is so freaking hilarious. As is the conversation that follows. I was damn near convinced it was Improv, until I looked it up. Even after, I’m still not convinced that it wasn’t.

Poor Magnus! As if he hasn’t been through enough, freaking Lorenzo shows up with his ridiculous jealousy and outlandish accusations. Absolutely unnecessary!

Fuck off, Lorenzo! (Sorry, Javi. I adore you Javi! Clearly, you’re doing a great job since I despise Lorenzo so much.)

The anger on Alec’s face, as he listens to Lorenzo threaten Magnus, is weirdly sweet and sexy. No one messes with Alec’s man. Honestly, Lorenzo is lucky Alec didn’t come running out there. Only his respect for Magnus kept him from doing so.

I am so glad that Magnus overcame his fear, and trusted Alec enough, to tell him the truth about Asmodeus being his father. We know, from earlier episodes, that Magnus doesn’t like to burden or bother people with his trauma. Especially Alec. This is a very big deal.

And I love that Alec is supportive and caring. He processes the information so quickly. Choosing to trust Magnus and his feelings for Magnus. A big step for Alec. This whole conversation is a huge step in the Malec relationship.

The gratitude on Magnus’ face when he realizes that Alec is not judging him is so sweet and heartbreaking. I hate that his past has traumatized him so deeply that he is constant in fear of being rejected. And I hate that we didn’t get a chance to learn more.

I hate that the werewolves are still treating Simon like shit just because he’s a vampire. The only crime he’s committed i laughing and having a good time with Maia. And I hate that Luke is still not doing anything about it.

How cute is it that Jace calls Simon for dating advice.

Magnus and Alec in Lorenzo’s house is hilarious. The comedic timing between Harry and Matt is perfection. Add in Javier’s ability to pretend to not notice any of it, and not crack up laughing is just phenomenal.

Alec and Magnus (and us) definitely deserved more comedic moments.

“And I’m scared, that if we take things too quickly, you’re going to see something in me that you don’t like. I just don’t want to ruin this.”

Jace’s soliloquy to Clary is both sweet and heartbreaking. Especially this last line. This is not your season 1 Jace!

Each time Raj is on screen, I hate him more. I don’t know who he thinks he is, arguing with Alec like he does, but it makes me hate him more. He makes Lorenzo look like an agent of peace and goodwill.

“That’s enough.”

Dear Raziel, every time Alec goes all demanding, fierce leader, I almost forget I’m AroAce. Almost. I feel like this is a good place to point out just how fucking pretty Daddario is. Because I feel like I haven’t done that in awhile and it feels neglected.

Alec’s determination to stay by Magnus’ side while he tries to fix the ley lines, The mixture of love and fear and admiration as he watches Magnus get ready is endearing and heartbreaking. Again, loving like that must be exhausting.

I love when Magnus does magic! Especially when it’s to save lives. What a fucking hero.

Seriously, Raj! Who the fuck do you think you are? Alec will kill you if something happens to Magnus because you think you don’t have to listen to Alec.

We now take this moment to fangirl/boy/boi over Matt’s impressive bicep. In purely appreciative way, of course…

Holy Hell, Magnus and Alec are the best team. And Harry, I see you trying not to smile when Alec/Matt says “Maybe I got a little help.”

I love that Alec reassures Magnus that he doesn’t care who Magnus’ father is. That he loves Magnus because of who he is. Such a beautiful conversation.
