Episode 3 What Lies Beneath
In this episode, we are digging deeper into the gang. Finding what is hiding beneath.
Jace’s nightmares are now happening while he’s awake. And fucking with his mental state.
Izzy’s powers of persuasion are so strong even the High Warlock of Brooklyn can’t resist.
Magnus love for Alec overcomes his fear of his mother.
Raphael’s heart may not be beating, but it can still feel.
Alec cannot cook. But Magus saves the stew.
Maryse actually does have a beating heart under all the Runes and politics.
Luke is a coward who cannot stand up to his own pack.
Poor Jace. My poor guy looks like shit. Kids, this is what not sleeping and pushing yourself to ridiculous expectations will do. My guy needs to be taking better care of himself.
Jace, these dreams and hallucinations are not good. I really wish he would tell someone about them. Like Alec. Who should be sensing something if that Parabatai Rune is working correctly.
Jonathan is extra creepy in this hallucination. But, damn, it’s good to see Will again.
All the props to Izzy for charming Magnus into hosting the dinner with Maryse. And convincing him to be at the dinner. She’s so damn good. And how cute is the smile on Alec’s face as he watches Magnus!!
Alec’s face throughout this is hilarious. I swear, Daddario has the best, most animated facial expressions ever.
Right here is the moment Izzy had Magnus wrapped around her finger. Harry is so damn good that you can see Magnus contemplating what she is saying and you can pinpoint that exact moment when he caves.
It doesn’t get much better than Izzy. She’s funny, she’s so supportive of Alec and Magnus, she’s loyal, she’s sassy, she’s smart, she’s gorgeous.
And how damn cute are Alec and Magnus!! I know, I say that a lot. I’m not sorry. Just look at them! The way they’re supportive of each other.
The way they smile at each other. The way each look has the undertone of love and wanting. They’re just so damn adorable.
And I love how much Izzy loves Magnus. This look of satisfaction when he agrees to have the dinner, the way she smiles as she watches him reassure Alec. She’s just the best!
Poor Raphael. He tries to hide it, but there really is a heart buried under all that swagger.
Clary, sweetie, I need you to stop talking and listen to Jace. He is not crazy.
I know they’re bad for each other, but I am glad Izzy is there for Raphael when Rosa dies.
This Malec cooking scene is hilarious. The way Magnus tries to calm Alec down. The way he uses magic on the stew when Alec steps away to make it taste better. Magnus poking fun at himself.
Alec - Okay, remember, my mother’s on edge. That means avoiding sensitive subjects like my dad or like that I turned down that job at The Clave.
Magnus - Or that you’re dating a dastardly Warlock.
Alec - I’m sorry. Am… Am I being terrible?
Magnus - Oh no, no. You’re just tense. Here. Drink this.
And then Alec proceeds to drink the entire glass in one gulp. Matt’s grimace at the drink, Harry’s face - it’s all so damn funny. And so damn good. I also wonder if this one is improv. I did look it up before writing this but was unable to find anything that confirmed or denied that. I’ll keep looking. This is definitely one of my fav Malec scenes.
Falling out of favor with The Clave looks so good on Maryse. She’s smiling and laughing, she’s seeing Magnus for the gem that he is, she’s seeing Alec for the amazing man he is. She’s got a cute new haircut. And she’s HOT!! I love this Maryse!
Magnus - This is your mother on edge? Hmm.
The looks on Magnus and Alec’s faces are priceless! Magnus just makes it better with this line.
I love how freaked out Alec looks at how well Magnus and Maryse are getting along.
I feel so bad for Maryse in some ways. Having your life stripped from you is devastating. And she gave up everything to try to right the wrongs of her youth. So much that it made her neglect the emotional needs of her children. At the same time, losing the Shadowhunter identity makes her realize this and she does her best to make that up to them.
Poor Alec. I love how passionately he defends Maryse. But she’s also right. Her generation fucked things up. His will have to be wiser. And the best way he can make a difference is to retain his position as Head of the Institute.
It’s crazy how much I love Maryse now. Going from one of my least favorite characters to one of my favorites. She definitely has the best character growth on the show. Her parting words to Magnus and Alec were exactly how a mother should feel about her child and their partner. Welcome to the Malec fandom, Maryse.
Magnus - I suppose we’ll be seeing more of you.
Maryse - I’d like that. I may have had my prejudices in the past, but seeing you stand by Alec - it’s what every mother wants for her children. Thank you for loving my boy.
And the looks on Alec and Magnus’ faces are so sweet and beautiful.
Seriously, the talents in both Harry and Matt are insane! They play off each other so well. It hes that they are friends in real life. They really are just the best.
Poor Simon! This poor guy is just trying to life his undead life and those fucking werewolves and their ridiculous prejudice are making that so hard. He does not deserve the way they treat him. Not my Sweet Simon.
Luke! You’re the fucking Alpha! You need to put your foot down and tell the pack that their hate of Simon is unfounded and that he is going to be around. But no, you cave to them, instead. And poor, Sweet Simon is out on his ass.
