Episode 9 Familia Ante Omnia
This episode is all about family. In one form or another.
Clary faces death after killing her father and using the wish to bring back Jace.
Alec cycles between hope for saving his brother to despair that he will have to kill his brother to conflicted that they may be able to save Jace but at the expense of the man he loves. (Alec is really going through it in this one)
Lorenzo’s jealousy over Magnus’ family station versus his own leads him to make a very poor decision.
Magnus finally loses his well controlled grip on his legendary temper when he learns that Lorenzo stands in the way of him saving Alec’s brother and Parabatai.
Simon, who has been neglecting his vampire needs, attacks his own family under Heidi’s well guided gaslighting.
Jace repays Clary by freeing her from the Clave only to capture her for Lilith to use her in raising Clary’s brother from the dead.
And I continue to mourn the loss of this family because the executives at ABC, Freeform, and Netflix are idiots.
What’s the point of sentencing Clary to death? What’s done is done. The wish is gone. There’s no lesson to be learned here. Oh yeah, it’s because Jia is a bitch.
Magnus staying up all night - and being 6 coffees in - to find a way to save Jace for Alec, is so sweet. Magnus really is the best of them all.
Alec looks both grateful and concerned. And Magnus really did have a great idea.
The beginning of Clary’s downfall. Because the Angels in the Shadow World are almost as big of dick’s as the ones in the Winchester World.
“We’re not soldiers in your personal army, Luke. We’re family. Can you honestly stand there and say that Clary’s life is more important than all of ours? I get it. She’s your daughter. But we’re your family, too. You walk out that door, you lose this pack for good.”
I don’t like Russell. I think he is arrogant and cruel and ridiculous. But he does make a few good points here. Luke has made it clear, for quite some time now, that he would rather be a Shadowhunter. And he has treated the Pack like 2nd class citizens. That said, Clary is his daughter and he definitely should want to save her. He just should have approached the pack with it in a different way.
I love when Alec lays down the law and shows just how tough he is. Especially with cretins like Lorenzo.
It’s so clear that Lorenzo has no intention of helping Alec and Magnus save Jace. That look of disdain on his face says it all.
Guys! Alec has come such a very long way from the guy in Season 1. Being in love with Magnus has done wonders for this man. And yes, I know I have said that before. But it’s worth saying again.
This scene breaks me every time. Magnus was so excited and filled with hope and determination. Then Catarina got there.
Clearly it broke her heart to have to be the one to tell Magnus that Lorenzo forbade the Warlocks from helping him. Part of me hates that she had to be the one to tell him. Part of me is glad that it was his good friend that he heard it from.
Remember, a couple of episodes ago, when I said Magnus would be terrifying when properly pissed off? This look tells me that I was right.
This confrontation between Magnus and Lorenzo is brutal. Magnus’ anger is vicious and Lorenzo’s jealousy is insane. Watching them go head to head is both fascinating and terrifying.
The fact that Lorenzo is so determined to hold onto his jealousy and dislike of Magnus that he is wiling to let an innocent man suffer at the hands of Lilith is so gross. Usually Lorenzo is just flashy and shallow. But this is just so very wrong.
Lorenzo is absolutely insane in his hubris. This look should have sent the man running and screaming for his life.
And there’s that terrifying anger in all it’s fiery glory. The usually laid back, stoic Warlock hides a deep, white hot passion. And I wish we had seen more of this side of Magnus. Because Harry kills it!!
Most of the time, I have very little patience for the Heidi storyline. But this face off between her and Simon over his family is intense. I think that’s partly because Alberto and Tessa are a real life couple. But it’s also because we got to see Heidi as more than a pawn in Raphael’s need to be a daylighter or as the insane vampire who doesn’t think things through. Because this move was very well thought out. And very well executed. Well done Heidi.
Sweet Simon, NO!! Becky, darlin, RUN!
Thank Hecate for Izzy and Jordan. Also, since when can Izzy compel vampires??
This scene always devastates me. The way Magnus stands staring, with his hand over his mouth, as if he is horrified by what he knows - that the only way to save Jace is the last thing Magnus wants to do. The one thing that will put him in danger.
Alec, I love you and I want to save Jace as much as you do. And I know Magnus going to Edom to ask Asmodeus for help is the only way. But I do wish you had tried a little harder to talk Magnus out of it.
My poor love. He is terrified. But he will do this. For Alec. I’ll say it again, it must be so exhausting to love like that.
Once again, Izzy is the one that is there for Simon. And I am so here for it!
I have nothing to say about this shot. Except that I think it is gorgeous.
Sherwood, you sure are pretty.
See ya next time for Erchomai
